Are extramarital affairs common in Latin America?

Is it okay if the man has other women?
Is it okay if the woman has other men?
If it is common, and considered 'normal,' then is there any jealousy or marital issues arising from it, being that it is expected?

In Latin America a man is a man when he cheats his wife, everybody congratulates him for doing so
But if a woman cheats her husband she's called a whoore, a slut....

Ok, it's ok for a Latin American man to have other woman. I am a Latin American who lived my whole life here and didn't know that. I'll try to learn more with Americans about myself. I'll tell my father he's stupid cause he doesn't cheat my mother, Americans said that as a Latin Americans he was expected to do so.

YOU ARE SO ******* IDIOTS!!

Edit:
Latina? Where is she (answer above) from? California? Texas? Why do she even call herself latina? She can't point out Buenos Aires in the map. Don't believe you and your ghetto friends represent anything, except ghetto people.

Fundamentally there is very little difference between men and women when it comes extra marital affairs no matter what culture they belong to. People have had extra marital affairs since time began! Even in strict religious cultures there are people who will have affairs and lovers outside their marriage. Sadly its the way of the world. Therefore, your judgement in these matters should be always about the individual. Ask yourself whether the individual you know would behave like that and look for hard evidence to support any accusations of misdemeanours. On jealousy you will find that the large majority of men and women no matter where they come from have some form of jealousy.

In Colombia it is a common as the Honda civic is on US streets. Many men have "girlfriends" and it is a function of both status, and money. Women are NOT allowed to have other men and are scorned by their friends and etc if they do. The women who are being cheated on dont like it but often times the man is their means of support and if he goes the woman and the kids will be out in the street. Look for surreptitious emails, extra cell phones (almost all cell phones are pre-paid in Colombia) and unexplained "working late" "extra meetings" trips to outlying regions , especially Melgar and Giradot.. It's very common.. and just part of the Colombian society

It is not expected, but it is more common for men than women to have affairs since society is still very macho. That does not make it okay, and yes, like anywhere else, it disrupts the harmony of any marriage.

Of course. As is true for all humans every place. In much of Latin America it is widely accepted for men to have affairs, even second families, without much or any criticism, and lots of envy.

Women that handle their affairs too publicly are condemned for it- apparently it is the single biggest reason for wife beating/killing. DOesn't seem to cause much abandonment for some reason.
This doesn't mean an affair must be an absolute secret, just not flaunted to wildly. But this is just a tendency.

WHen you ask a question about Latinamericans you are asking a question far too general for a single good answer, there is far more variety in Latin American culture than there is in North America.

'Machismo' will never die in Latin America and it has existed since the "caudillos" came to be.

So it's acceptable to a certain extent (like men are given a hi5) or common for men to cheat, but if women do it then they are called every name in the book.

It really pisses me off, but that's our culture. :-/

It is not ok for a man to have other women, but it is forgivable sometimes depending on the woman.
It is even worse if a woman has other men and is unforgivable because more is expected from a woman than from a man.
It is not normal and yes there is jealousy and marital issues.
This also depends and varies from one couple to another but generally speaking this is the way it is in Costa Rica as well as other latin cultures.

In Brazil the answer would be yes and also not.
In the amazon area the numeric relationship between men and women is disproportionate, there are more women than men. Like this is common exist married men with 3 or 4 wives. They constitute families with 20 or more children. Due to the dangers of the forest men die young and in larger number in the Amazonian. But in the rest of Brazil that is not acceptable.

thats like asking 'is it common for the sun to rise in the morning'
