There are several urban cities, like San José, Alajuela, Heredia, Cartago, Ciudad Quesada, San Isidro General.
The other cities are more rural, there are plenty of towns but no matter where you go you will find most commodities such as supermarkets or puplerías which are like delis, small shops, restaurants, cafes, stores, hospitals, Pharmacies, schools and parks.
Some of these places are clean others are dirty it depends on the neighborhood.

all are rural cities. even sj, it's just a small town if you compare it with a real definition of urban cities

There are more rural cities than urban ones. You can count as urban cities; Cartago, Heredia, Limón, San José, Alajuela, Puntarenas, Liberia and Ciudad Quesada. After those cities, you might consider the rest as rural ones.

Regarding the comment about that they are all dirty; generalizations are not always good, and it would be good to experience yourself because there are also very clean ones as well.

Hope the answrr might help you.

Have a nice day

Costa Rica is beautiful place, but San Jose is indeed the most ugly city in the world.

Most of the cities are small towns in the rural area, some of them hardly have a grocery store.

San Jose, Cartago, Heredia, Alajuela, those 4 big cities are together. There's not a long distance between each one, and there, you can find anything you want. Car rentals, hospitals, universities, big supermarkets, malls and commercial centers, hotels, banks, etc.

Jingly,

Premed's answer is completely false. I'm thinking he needs to get out of the classroom and into the real world.

San Jose and other urban areas certainly have their ugly sides, slums and trash problems - like many, many other cities worldwide.

As a former Chicago resident I can attest that Chicago's beautiful lakefront and upper class neighborhoods border slums and garbage filled empty lots that rival anything found here in Costa Rica.

MOST of Costa Rica is rural and beautiful.
