Check with the US State Dept. They issue travel advisories for American citizens.
Once you select a "safe" country, I find that Lonely Planet guides are pretty awesome for traveling advice about cheap hotels and restaurants. |

dont listen to the guy who said colombia is really dangerous and you get kidnapped easily... that was 15 years ago now colombia is very safe and it is beautiful... the president actually made a military stategy called democratic security which was to get all guerrillas and kidnapping bands who were in the forests and jungles outside of cities to deep jungles in the very inside of the country and it has actually worked well ... even small cities are safe from kidnapping now |

To the person who said you should avoid Colombia because you will get kidnapped, that is NOT true. Don't listen to him!
you should visit colombia, it's a wonderful country and a lot safer than people think it is. look around in the latin america section of Y!A and see what other people have replied about colombia in other questions. |

James W. you're dumb. Colombia can be as safe or unsafe as any other South American city.
Trust me, if you take his advice, you'll be missing out on a very beautiful country.
* Each country/city in South America has nice and shady areas. Just use common sense. |

Im 17 and i got there every year, my spanish isnt ryl good, even better i look like a white girl :P, and iv never felt any danger of getting kiddnapped.
Colombia is the most beautiful amazing place on this earth, and iv never felt more safe in my life then when im there. |

Costa Rica, Argentina, Chile are somewhat ok.
Avoid Colombia unless you want to get kidnapped.
