Are there taranchulas in Costa Rica?

I am going to Costa Rica this summer and I'm deathly afraid of spiders. Are there taranchulas there????
Additional Details
Also, its a backpacking trip. I'll be in tents and hostels for three and a half weeks, so any good anti-insect advice?

Yes, there are!!! I was there for a couple of weeks last month and saw two of them: one in the forest and another in the parking lot of a local village art co-op. However, they seemed to be harmless and even afraid of humans, and the locals seemed to pay them no attention. For me, they were cool to see and I didn't mind at all.

However, if you are truly afraid of them, you should definately keep in mind where you are going. If you restrict your travels to the major cities (San José, Liberia, etc.), the beach, and major tourist centres (Puerto Limón), you will most likely have no problems as nobody whom I talked to had ever seen one there. While you may not experience the country as the locals would, but I think thats the price you pay if you are truly that scared of them.

Hope this helps!!

We just got back from CR and I have not seen any tarantula at all...I know they have them though. We hardly saw any bugs, not even mosquitos!!! But we saw lots of sloths, monkeys, iguanas, frogs, crocodiles....
It was very safe !!! Do not worry too much!

There are many varieties of insects in Costa Rica. I once almost jumped out of the shower getting away from a scorpian. I came to my senses and decided I was paying hotel bill so I splashed the scorpion into corner of shower.

I also n
knew a guy that kept a bug board with hundreds of insects pinned to it.

Also, it is the only place that I have seen a beetle as large as my hand stand on its hind legs to do battle when a human stomped on the ground near the beetle.

Be afraid....very afaid. Actually, relax and enjoy. Just shake out your clothes and shoes before putting them on.

I think so. But do not spoil your "wanting" to go to Costa Rica just because of these freaky spiders. I tell you there are so much stuff to enjoy there.

Yes there are Tarantulas in Costa Rica as well as all the other countries in Central America. They are commonly called Metacaballos**.If you are "deathly afaid"of spiders I'm sure nothing I say will make you feel any better or safer.I have traveled in Central america for years and never had a problem with them.Although there are many things that can cause you harm in Central America, tarantulas are not one of them.

**Caballo in Spanish means horse, think of the tarantula as a tiny, somewhat hairy, pony....with 8 legs.
