As a Costa Rican I’m afraid to recognized that is not safe to go out at night in San Jose or any main town, also do not leave any values on your car, there are some people that like specifically to still American passports since they have certain value at the “black market”

Stay away from San Jose, dont flash your money, and keep your money separated in different places... just in case.
I was there 2 weeks ago and I felt safe the whole time... I drove to Pavones.
If you fly in late get a taxi to a hotel in the Airport area (Best Western Irazu, and hampton inn are both good) and then rent a car and drive the next morning.
Use common sense... and I would definitely get out of San Jose ASAP.
Also, be very careful driving... the roads can be a bit scary.
Have fun!

I lived in San Jose, Costa Rica for awhile a few years ago. I found it to be a very nice place to live and never had any problems while I was there. Currently there are not any travel alerts for Costa Rica. I included a link to the US Department of State website with information about Costa Rica for you. This is very informative and should help you to make a decision. I would not be scared to go to any part of Costa Rica. Simply take precautions like you would no matter where you travel. Even within the US you could become a victim of crime. Common sense is the best tool you can use. Have fun - Que tenga un buen viaje! :)

stay away from san jose as much as possible. is like any other big city around the world... when you are outside san jose don't leave luggage or personal items out of site. the rest, just enjoy and have a good trip. take care'

Yes, watch out for the mutant bananas that come to life and eat babies.
