Are women treated really badly in Colombia?

I would have to agree with Adrian mostly. On the side (and I think with a lot of Latinos), it is "OK" for men to have a girlfriend on the side. That, along with low wages, the money does not go too far.

My wife (latina) says she expects me to have novias/mistresses because I am hombre and it is expected. It is, I think embedded in the culture...unfortunately. And no, I have not taken my wife up on her offer:-) I believe in being fiel.

edit-as far as the abuse part goes...the people I know who are colombians, I have not heard of any abuse.

I have heard of abuse as in any other (30+ visited) country. Try opening the newspaper in Wash DC, NYC, or any other place.

Look I do not know where Colombia gets these myths from about the men, just beat up their women all day, and that we are all high of our brains on coke, and the television has not been invented here yet and that we speak colombian, but it is rubbish.

Here is the deal, all men on the planet are pervs, any man who says he is not is a liar, even gay men are pervs. Colombian men like a pretty White girl just as much as american or english men love a pretty white girl.

Some Colombian men come home drunk and beat there women, some American men come home drunk and beat there women.

If anything the Colombian men are better because if you come here as a tourist they will want to help you find what you are looking for just to talk to you. We do not all live in jungle where you may get kidnapped by talking to someone. As long as you stay in the cities you will be safe.

That is the deal for men nationwide.

according to my friend from colombia if i had travelled to the area (as the "white girl" that i am)
i would immediatly be spotted, lured and "unspeakable" things would happen to me.

but you know what? f**k it.
i seriously want to go there, it looks fantastic.

They view woman as objects...its their upbringing. I went on a tour there before I went to Afghanistan. Its a nice place but the people are cooky

alejandro u dont know anything. maybe some americans come home and beat their wifes. but a significantly LARGER amount of colombians come home and beat their wifes. do you know why? 2 reasons. they is a significantly larger amount of poverty in colombia. everyone knows that. and in colombia everyone knows the police DONT DO ANYTHING. u can get away with beating your wife there but in america you can't go around doing those sort of things.

I know that American Woman are treated very well in Latin America...Because we are different. You have to be prepared to hear whistles when you walk past a group of Latino men... Latino Men can be pushy just remember that "NO" is the same in Spanish as it is in English.

As far as how Latino Men treat Latino Women. You will definitely find some abuse, But that's in every country. Women are very very verbally abused and that results in low self esteem, and you can tell by the way they talk that don't have a good self esteem... How ever at the same time some Latino men treat their wives and girlfriends like princesses, and these woman feel very good about themselves...

My friends who live in Latin America treat their wives and women in general with very much respect...

You can't say that all women are treated badly their but some are...Kinda like here. Some woman in the US are treated badly and some are treated very well

well the only thing is that here the men sayd ugly things ... we said to them " viejos verdes" they said things like ..youÂ´re so beautifull but in ugly words and we hate it ....but not here they respect us so much

Well I'm Colombian and I think that women right here are treated just like in any other part of the worlds, here there is huge feminism, well no that much, but here women have taken a very important part in the society, but they are not treated bad, in fact they are a very important part in Colombia, well I love them, they amke me happier, and Colobmian girls are pretty and smart
