My friend took an EF College break tour there. It cost her 1800 for round trip airfare, hotels, breakfast daily, and tour director with some adventures. They take care of the details. All she had to pay for was lunch and dinner (which is cheap). This program is cheap because it's a student travel thing, so it has discounted prices. That and you can opt to stay behind and do more exploring for yourself. Right now there is a sale going on, where you get a discount when you put in the promo code hesseln1188. She saved at least $50 from it. I don' t know if that helps but its an option. |

Tranquilo Backpackers in San Jose will help you out alot. They have a pool and its got info on tours etc. Only stay in San Jose if you have to though, it is not safe to go out at night there.
Mal Pais is a must! There are some cool hostels here. Cabinas Playa Santa Teresa (it is all one big beach both Mal Pais y Santa Teresa) costs $50 total for 4 people with a kitchenette. The Mal Pais surf club is around $15 per person and they have a pool which is nice. lots of good info here.

Samara is cool too. It is in a little gulf so there is not much surf and it is better for swimming. Lots of cheap rooms and cool cafes on the beach.

Most towns have hotels for around $10-$15 per person but that may not include AC or hot water, but I get along just fine without both!
The Arenal Volcano is a big tourist attraction as it is a live, active, volcano with lava flows.
