Best beach/hotel to stay in Costa Rica..January..?

Personally i'd like to really get down and dirty with the culture and see what its like to live there, but mu husband just wants to stay at a nice resort.
so id like to find something inbetween. id like a cheap hotel (because i dont plan to spend my time in it) and id like to be next to the warmest beach, just to lay out and relax and soak up the sun. not interested in surfing or scuba. so id like something pretty, warm, and relaxing. and if possible:cheap and more foreign not americanized!
Thanks so much

please comment if you have been there.
not so interested in answers that tell me to look up other sites.
thanks

Manuel Antonio is at best a two day stop. No great beaches as you imagine - there's a small one in the park with really fine white sand, but you need to bring any food and drinks in yourself. And the beach is small.
For beaches I'd head further south from there: Dominical & Uvita. There are a few good B & Bs, and that's all you need.

Further up the coast you have Samara with the really lovely Carillo beach - but again, no chairs, lounges or drinks served by someone to you (unless it's hubby). There is a truck stopped on the road, selling beer and drinks though.
But if you expect the same as in Mexico or in the Caribbean, go all inclusive.

i have been to costa rica a few times. But plan to go back because there are many places I haven't been able to see. I liked Tamarindo...its quite touristy...There's a lot of surfers there though.

I have been highly recommended to go to Manuel Antonio. I heard it is a must see place in Costa Rica. I plan to go back in January and plan to go there. Just google manuel antonio and you will find a ton of information. Costa Rica is a beauitful place and the people are very friendly. enjoy your trip
