Why do business with an American chain car rental agency? I've used tricolor for 3 visits and have had nothing but EXCELENT service from them - their rates are also a lot cheaper than the American companies.

Also be aware that any rental form the airport is going to charge an aditional 12% tax. Most of the local rental companies will have an off site location with a shuttle

I belive any rental in costa Rica is good, once you have make a good check out of the car when they give it to you. You will not like to hear when you deliver it that it has a new scratch you know you didn't make. Alamo and Budget, good american rentals, We also have Tricolor (that is cheaper than the americans) and have great service. For a more local one go for Mapache, They have great cars, great service and all national.

Wherever you rent one at take good notes of previous damage.

Learn how to be an aggresive driver down there...it's scary!

I've had good luck with all of the major rental outfits like Budget etc. But before you sign for the vehicle do a close inspection of every body panel / glass/ and undercarriage. Take photos or video as you do this. Having these has saved me lots of money when it comes time to drop off the car because they like to say "where did that scratch / dent come from?" and you can prove it was there when you picked it up.

Airport budget rental office is good.

I'd say Alamo, it's about 500mts from the main airport, and the prices are reasonable.
