There are several small ones in Alajuela downtown, only 5-10 minutes from the airport. These are old homes converted to hostels. There are more than 10 in this city, look them up in the net, I do not know all their names.... sorry.

Believe me, Alajuela is not a place to stay while in CR, is better to be 15 minutes from the airport but close to everything in San Jose. Casa Laurin is one I recommend the most (even my mother in law liked it), safe, comfortable, close to everything, the owner is wonderful and helpful, and the breakfast.. delicious!

Alajuela campground is the place to go.
They charge only $ 5 a night,which is probably the best deal in Costa Rica right now.
Its only 1 mile from Alajuela without the street noise they have in downtown.The hostel is located in Tuetal in a safe upscale area with good bus connections to Alajuela and San Jose.
Clean rooms,nice bathrooms and a full kitchen plus a large TV room.
A taxi ride from the airport is about $ 8.
