In Guate I would dress a little more formally- than in US. Do not wear shorts- you will stand out. It is so beautiful in Guatemala. If you are going in the next fews months it will be rainy season. Guatemalans all seem to be well dressed. You will have a great time just pack your city smarts and your patience...Guatemalans don't have the same importance of time like Americans.... So don't be obsessed by your clock...you'll get there!

Sorry, you are going to look like a tourist. Not anything you can do about that. The good news is that Guatemalans are extremely warm and friendly people. Observe basic customs and coutesies and you will do fine. Check here http://www.myantiguaonline.com/Antigua_Guatemala_Customs.html

It depends on what color you are! I am white, and I stood out, but not in a bad way, and my husband says it depends on where you go. They love it when you try to speak their language, especially if you are in a village that speaks a dialect. Learn a few words, and use them. In Aguacatan, Huehuetenango, 'thank you' is: Tiox Tu'. (There are 2 dots over the 'x', I believe.) That is pronounced: tee osh tuh. They seem to love tourists there, so I wouldn't worry about looking like one. Ya might wanna hide your money in the city, tho! Have fun!!!
