Hi! I highly recommend you book it in advance because there is a limited number of places available for each month. I used Llama Travel (actually I booked mine through Loki hostel that works with Llama travel) and they were AMAZING!! It was a wonderful experience and I'm sure you'll have a great time..the cost is $475 x person...you can join other groups so don't worry about traveling by yourself and besides people in Cuzco are soooo friendly, you'll love it!
Good luck!

you CAN'T, for doing the inka trail, you have to do it with an authorized travel agency, that way, you are safe and we are also safe (you won't be able to do any "bad" thing during the trail)

You could I am sure book one locally in Peru but do be careful travelling alone in South America would not be advisable better to do the Inca trail with others. My friends were easily robbed in this area.

Wait until you get to Cuzco to hire the service for the Inca Trail, it is cheaper and there will be more than one foreigner local to let you know what is the best service.
