Can i leave an airport if i have a connecting flight which isn't until the next day?

Hi,

I'm travelling from Bristol, Uk to Peru, via Newark airport, New York. Would i be able to find a hotel in the city and sightsee for a bit before having to catch my connecting flight to Lima?

I can't find any information on the websites of either the airport or continental airlines!!

Thanks

If you check on Yahoo Maps. http://maps.yahoo.com/
Newark airport is nearest to the New Jersey area (keep in mind that there's a lot of traffic in NY). So I would suggest that you search for a Hotel or Motel in the Jersey City area, better still, one next to the hudson river. That's the spot with the best view of Manhattan (Poster Picture).

You can also go to Manhattan at night time when traffic is low and many places to go.

I would also suggest that you ask in Travel - United States - New York City for places to stay in Jersey City and time it takes from one point to the other with the traffic.

Good luck

Not only can you leave the airport, in fact you MUST pass through immigration and customs. You cannot remain in an international transit area as you can in other countries, particularly in Europe.

All international flights arriving in the US require that you pass through immigration and customs, claim your luggage and recheck you luggage. If you flight is more than 6 or 8 hours later, you probably won't be able to check your bags through to Peru or obtain a boarding pass unless you do so electronically.

Probably but the US has recently changed travel arrangements for british citizens and I believe we now need to fill in an entry visa questionnaire try the US embassy for more info

I'm pretty sure that you can leave the airport, but since you will be entering the US, you will have to go through customs at Newark before you can enter New York.

As others already said, when you have a stop-over in any US airport, you MUST clear immigration and customs in the US port of entry.

If you carry a UK passport (or any other passport of a country that falls under the VWP), and you satisfy a number of requirements, you may be able to do this under the Visa Waiver Program. If you do not satisfy the requirements or are from another country, you may have to apply for a tourist or transit visa for the US.

If you are traveling under the VWP, please make sure to fill out the ESTA form as soon as possible.

As for PerĂº, see the link below.

Have fun in Peru, I just came back from a 3 weeks visit. It's a GREAT country with friendly people and lots of culture!

yes ofcourse you are not just held in the airport . if i were you i would get a hotel at the airport then get one of the hotel buses to take you where ever you want to go. just realize that NYC is huge you will not be able to see much. have a nice trip
