My mom and I have a joint checking account. I need traveler's checks, but I'm not anywhere near home at my local bank. Can she use my account to buy travelers checks in my name that I can use? I'm over 18 if that matters.
I would not bring travelers checks to Costa Rica. They are a pain to cash and most businesses will not accept them as the banks here treat them as a check and hold the funds on the merchant for up to 30 days.
There are plenty of ATM machines that will take any US ATM card, and offer you the option to withdraw US dollars or Costa Rican Colones. Do yourself a favor and leave the travelers checks at home when traveling to Costa Rica

Probably not since you have to countersign the checks and then re-sign them. Why not just put the money on your ATM card and use that? Or send you $$$ by Western Union?

You do not have to be at your local bank to get travelers checks, providing duel signatures are not required. Your mom can not buy you travelers checks, since your signatures are required on all checks issued.
Example, if you bank at B of A in San Diego, you can walk into a B of A bank in Dallas, write a check for the amount of traveler’s checks you want. If you have a debt card, you can get travelers checks from just about any bank, but expect a service charge.

Don't bother with those. Just use a visa & $$.
There are ATM machines available almost everywhere but DO notify your bank before you go that you will be using them there.
