Well this is going to be a little biased, but just a little :)

The war basically started because of the rich salt fields in coastal Bolivia. Salt was an important commodity in those days and Chile had a previous agreement with the UK that if they helped them to boost their ships and army in general, then Chile would sell the salt exclusively to the UK.

On the other side, Peru had a non-agression pact with Bolivia which also included military help if one was in need.

So Chile invaded Bolivia and Peru was forced to enter the war in a time of political chaos. Bolivia lost its maritime territorries (Atacama and Antofagasta I think) and Chile advanced into Peru. After many cruel and bloody battles, in the South, Tarapacá, Iquique, Arica and Tacna, Chileans reached Chorrillos and Miraflores (small towns near Lima and now part of the Great Lima area), a lot of robbing and raping occured there. Once they reached the capital Lima, Peru had to serrender and sign the Pact of Ancón.

Perú lost it's southern territories up to Arica and Tacna which after 30 years of Chilean invasion had a plebiscite to decide if they wanted to remain Chilean or Peruvian, Arica is now part of Chile while the now called "heroic city of Tacna" returned to Peru. Lima also lost valueble archives from the Natioanl Library (they have been partially returned just a couple of months ago in an attempt to soften a territorial dispute being held at The Hague International Court) and all of it's marble decorations from its colonial past as capital of the Spanish posessions in South America, they're now proudly displayed in Santiago de Chile. And all of this for a war that wasn't ours in the first place.

I must add, soon after the war, salt was replaced with other fuels and Chile was left with a vast territory full of useless salt.

Peru's national heroes come from this war (Bolognesi, Grau, Ugarte, etc) so you can get an idea why there's a "rivalry" between Peru and Chile still to these days.

This is pretty much it seen from a Peruvian point of view. Go to wikipedia and look for "war of the pacific" for further info.

PD Paracas is still part of Peru and very far from the Chilean boundary.

ok, the Chileans are always trying to expand, they are called the Israel of SouthAmerica for the same reason and they are always fighting with everyone around because of their small territory and their expansion intention. Anyways, the whole Chilean territory belonged to Peru or the Inca Empire before so you now. Later, when the Spanish arrived, they formed their own country and later on attacked Peru and took the cities of Arica and Paracas. They also have attacked Bolivia and taken territory from them and sided with the English against Argentina over the "malvinas islands" (falkland islands) leading to Argentinian lost of the island.

Yep. All of the above is true.

Chile kicked Peru and Bolivia's bum bum and made Bolivia a landlocked nation. Peru had a cool general who rode himself and his horse off a cliff while being chased by Chilean Calvary. The Calvary fell to there death with the general.

Wikipedia provides a great source for information on the war between Perú and Chile, also called The War of the Pacific:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_of_the_Pacific

After Chile invades the coast of Perú and heads toward Lima, Wikipedia states:

"Regular Peruvian army and poorly armed citizens set up to defend Lima. However, Peruvian forces were defeated in the battles of San Juan and Miraflores, and the city of Lima fell in January 1881 to the forces of General Baquedano. The southern suburbs of Lima, including the upscale beach area of Chorrillos, were looted. Every civilian was forced to surrender their valuables or suffer a bitter end. This desperate order was issued to raise money to pay the late wages of the soldiers and prevent an uprising."

As an interesting fact I live close to this area, where the Battle of San Juan took place. Only about four blocks from me are small, unkempt hills separating oncoming and outgoing traffic. It is said that in those hills lie the remains of Chilean soldiers and Peruvian citizens from the war. The area is respected, and no one goes digging. Sometimes it makes me curious, though.
