Lake Atitlan is incredibly beautiful! It has 14 Mayan villages around its shores, including Panajachel, San Jorge, Santa Cruz, Jaibalito, Tzununa, San Marcos, San Pablo, San Juan, San Pedro, Santiago Atitlan, San Lucas, San Antonio, and Santa Catarina. Each one is different, and most are worth a visit.

I love the boat rides on the lake. The very best view is from the middle of the lake.

You can find a good map, and a lot more information at http://www.atitlan.net/ . They also have thousands of photos and videos from the area.

It takes 2 or 3 hours to drive from Guatemala City. The back road thru Patzun is also an amazing drive.
Enjoy your visit.

Its is very beautiful, you should visit. Don't forget to go to Tikal, like the movie Apocalito.

I assume you mean Lake Atitlan?

Very beautiful lake surounded by 3 volcanos. The main town of interest is Panajachel or the locals call it 'Gringotenango' because of the fact that it is overrun with tourist.

Dispite the fact that it you will be overrun with tourist. The views make it worth a visit.

Aldous Huxley once said that Lago Atitlan was more beautiful than Lake Como...I tend to agree with him. One of the most beautiful, haunting, fascinating places I've ever experienced.

One of the most beautiful places in Guatemala. It's a lake surrounded by twelve villages and three volcanos... It has everything, night life, cultural and historical places to meet and very friendly people....

there are two roads the main road a this one twisty mountain road that I would not recommend taking (notorious for being assaulted by thieves). Anyways the lake is very beautiful and if you decide to take a private boat ride or ferry to one of the surrounding towns make sure your back before at least sunset because the waters are known to get rough later on. The surrounding towns are beautiful because of their different color dresses, and customs. Just make sure and ask if you can take their pictures, especially the women because some think its kind of rude. The drive out there is worth it!

I agree with what everyone else said, but just be careful in Panajachel. Definitely take a boat to one of the smaller villages, there's something for everyone. there's the party village, the retreat village, the crafty village. (can't remember names sorry). it's truly beautiful and when you come around the bend before you start your assent into Panajachel it truly takes your breath away. Awesome!

I lived in Quetzaltenango and toured all over Guate.

Besides the Paradise on Earth scenery and friendly people these are three other things I enjoyed at Lake Atitlan.

I spent most of my time in San Pedro and studied Spanish there which was great. You can study 20-25 hours a week with a private teacher for between $50 and $70 US. You can also stay with a family for a few dollars more a day. This is a valuable thing to do before going elsewhere in Guatemala or Latin America.

Horseback riding to neighboring villages and along the lake shore is wonderful. Just don't go too far alone. Thieves have to make a living too.

Another neat thing to do is SCUBA diving not far from Panajachel. You can take a course or do a "fun dive". You'll have a good story to tell about feeling the warm volcanic mud on the bottom of the lake.

The lake is very beautiful and surrounded by mountains. The drive out there is through twisty mountain highways, but worth it!
