Sure you can buy a one way ticket, i wouldn't recommend it because how are you going to get back home. The only people who would question you may be customs about how long you're staying, not why you only bought a one way ticket.

Tico time directory and the rest of them obviously didn't fly to CR this days....
If you are female(or male that looks normal),they will NOT ask you for a two way ticket on the airport.1 year ago - flew in,6 months ago flew in,3 months ago flew in and 8 days ago I flew in from FL again, all with one way ticket .I even made a fuss last time that they just let me in with a child that is 6 years old and didn't ask for birth certificate or fathers permission to enter foreign country(is the law, they should ask because you can kidnap a kid).
If you really want to be on the safe side, make a reservation for a bus ticket out from Costa Rica to Panama(is about $16).Google tico bus

I experienced planning on staying in CR for an unlimited period of time from the US; I was required to have a round trip ticket via American Air.
But, if leaving from CR with a round trip ticket they won't require one. I recently left CR bound for the US,they did not require a return back to the US.
Many times for round trip than purchasing just a one way.

You will have to show proof of costarrican residency or citizenship to buy a one way ticket to Costa Rica.
Or have a ticket to leave to another country.
How do you plan on getting back or do you want to be an illegal alien in Costa Rica ?

First, why buy a one-way if you do not have enough money - then how are you getting the money to fly back, not counting the fact it will cost you more?

Buying a one-way (since 9/11) you WILL risk the chance of being questioned at the airport and maybe even being detained. So unless you plan on living in CR and/or staying for a long time, save and/or borrow the money and get a 2-way ticket.

About 2-3 years ago a friend bought a one-way, since he was building a house in CR and did not know when he would return. When he was trying to catch his connecting flight from Houston to San Jose, he got detained for over 12 hrs which was a nightmare experience he said he would never want to go through again. So now he makes a 2-way and if his plans now change when in CR, he just changes the departure date.
