It is possible and there are various routes. It is probably not a great idea for a couple of hottie females. First the trip is long, the roads are often bad and each border crossing is a real hassle and can be expensive. You need to be fully insured for emergency medical and health care plus insure the car. At each crossing you can expect a hassle for the car's paperwork.

I know at least 5 people that have done it and only one thought he might do it again, the rest said it wasn't worth the constant problems at borders and with the various police, all of whom depend on people like you as a buzzard does roadkill.

If you're really hotties you will have less hassles from the legal authorities but run bigger risks for come ons.

Its expensive, by the time you take into account food, lodging, entry and exit fees and so on.

Yes, on the pan-american highway, and no, I wouldn't drive it if I were you. you'd have to drive thru Mexico, Guatamala, El Salvador, Honduras , and Nicaragua to get to costa rica.

This is where google map is helpful. I am being honest it is driving distance but it will take multiple days of driving. Even if you live it the south part of the U.S. it would probably take 2-3 days. That's just my opinion. ) :

yes... through the interamericana

You can drive to Costa Rica.
The best route is to avoid El Salvador. - You can cut out a border crossing that way.
All the border crossings have people running up to your vehicle as you approach, offering their 'help' in getting through quickly.
Don't trust them.
Go into the necessary offices - usually about 5 different offices, with 5 different stamps for your passport and paperwork before you can get out of there.
If you pass money to one of the beckoning 'helpers', you'll never see it again.
Passing extra money to 'Officials' - in the offices - will get you through quicker.
Expect at least 1/2 a day getting through a border. - And another 1/2 a day getting through entering the next Republic. (There's a frontier area - no mans land, between republics)
Mexico is a long drive. Guatemala is very 'Military'. Expect to be stopped frequently by 'Military' with machine guns. - And bullet belts slung over each shoulder. - Quite impressive.
lol lol I've had the muzzle of machine guns poking my ribs while helping identifying personal articles. (Not on purpose though) lol lol They also want to eat any candy or cookies you got. lol lol
Honduras show off their atomic mite with symbols of atomic power on rock faces ... and huge pictures painted on the rock faces of their latest politimest people' of Central America.

I've taken 4 trips - up and down - ...And would do it again. :) F U N !

Yes you can, that is, if you can make it past Mexico and the other Central American countries....
