The difference is a combination of the answers. It is the same ingredients, but the water maybe be a little different and the sweetener (Sugar vs. Corn Syrup) is definitely different.
By the way avoid Coke Zero in Costa Rica. It contains sodium cyclamate, a sweetener strictly prohibited by the FDA. We wrote a blog in Spanish about this subject.
If you need any other information about Costa Rica, try the TicosLand.com website.

Coca cola does taste different in Costa Rica. It contains sugar instead of corn syrup-- just like coke did here until 1985. For some the difference is subtle but there is a clear difference. Costa Rican coke takes more like the kosher coke you can get here around passover.

I personally think it tastes a lot better I only drink diet coke in the U.S. but drink coke in Costa Rica. To get exactly the same taste you will have to get imported coke.

I agree that the coke in Costa Rica often tastes a little different. It's the same drink but I think maybe it tastes different because of the water in Costa Rica that is used in the mixture or from other variations of the ingredients. But it is suppossed to taste the same.

You are not nuys. I am Brazilian and I was never Costa Rica, but I can answer your question because I already proved the American Coke.
The difference is in the sugar.
In Brazil we used the cane sugar and in the United States the sugar is made of beet that has a flavor completely different from the flavor of the Cane of sugar.
Like this being the Coke and Fanta is with different flavors, where cane sugar is used..
Fanta in Brazil has the flavor still more different, because of the Brazilian legislation the soft drinks that announce to have fruit flavor, it has to have juice of the fruit whose flavor its says to have. Fanta in Brazil is orange juice with gas and coloring to be with the color of the original soft drink.
Fanta in Brazil has a long history. In Amazon they didn't have soft drink factory, they were imported of the states of the south of the country. As it was exposed in the sun and to the extreme heat the color disappeared and when it arrived to the consumer Fanta was transparent and without color. When they built a soft drink factory in Amazon and they began to sell yellow Fanta. They didn't sell a single bottle, the consumers didn't recognize the product and they said that that was falsification. They were necessary 6 years to do Manoaras (Amazon habitants) to consume Fanta, They were put to sale without color, later little by little it was putting coloring until reaching the usual color.

There are actually two reasons. For starters, they use sugar cane and not corn syrup in Costa Rica. The second reason is that the coke recipe is altered for different parts of the world. I am in Costa Rica now, and I definitely prefer the Coco Cola here. In India, the Carribean and Britain it seemed more syrupy and sweet.

I was listening to NPR in Vermont a few months ago. They had a Pepsi CEO that claimed that he could easily spot the difference between Coke and Pepsi. She ultimately wouldn't face the challenge because, "The Pepsi here is different than in France." (I think maybe it was France, I remember an accent.)

Anyway, Pepsi changes the recipe, and I believe that Coke does too.

Why would you want to drink Coke in Costa Rica when they have two of the best beers in the world in "IMPERIAL" and "IMPERIAL LIGHT"?
