Cost to hike Machu Picchu? |
Im interested in hiking Machu Picchu with my buddy sometime in December, and was wondering if anyone could recommend a tour company that provides the best experience (i.e. they don't cut corners or rush you) for about 2 days time. What type of expenses would I be looking at for two people, and how do they compare (both experience, trust and costs) to private tours?
Also, what are the tipping customs like in Peru?
Thanks!! |

If you want to do the traditional 4 day Inca trail it will cost around $400 all up, including food, guide, porters, train back to cuzco etc. There is a 2 day version as well, but not too sure what the price is. You cannot do a private tour, the traditional Inca trail is highly regulated and only a set amount of people are allowed on the trail each day, all the companies take you in a group of about 8 people. All the companies offer much the same thing, it makes little difference which one you go with. You must book it in advance too, for that time of year about a month in advance will be enough.
Alternatively, there are several other treks you can do which end in machu picchu, but these are not the traditional inca trail. But they do have major advantages in that they are not as crowded, they cost about a third of what the traditional trail does and there is no need to book in advance, you can just show up in cuzco and jump on a trek whenever.
Tipping in Peru is not mandatory, but it is nice to tip your guide and porter. |

You can use our budget calculator for travelers visiting Peru, so go to http:www.southamericamyjourney.com and see the faqs. By the way tipping in Cusco is approximately 10%, but indeed it depends what you heart feel it or how much you appreciate the effort that people made for you. |

Don't you mean hiking TOO Machu Picchu. That would mean taking the Inca trail . My advise is to get to Cusco & hunt for a local guide, There are plenty there with competetive prices .
I Done the trail in 94 & it was an awsome experience. When you get to the Sun Gate it is just breathtaking.
Alternatively check out Mountain Madness . They are a well established reliable tour firm.
Dont forget to chew plenty of Coca leaves to counteract the altitude which can sap your strength .
have a great time :) |

Not too sure about the costs, but if you want a great experience, there is a tour company called Marili Tours and its just wonderful (not pricey at all).
I think this is their web page:
