I agree that this is not a good way to plan a trip to Costa Rica. Costa Rica. It is not like Brazil or the U.S. where distances are long. Are you planning a 1-2 week trip or are you planning to live awhile. If you need to be based somewhere and then travel throughout the country, San Jose is best. You can get to anyplace in the country in less than a day from San Jose on public transportation (less if you rent a car, take a tour, or use a shuttle or plane). Otherwise I would decide what you want to do before I decided on provinces.
San Jose annd Cartago will give you the best feeling for the cutlure but they have no beaches. Guanacaste and Limon have unique cultures and Guanacaste and Puntarenas have the better beaches. Alajuela has Arenal Volcano, Cano ***** national park and the hot springs (in addition to the city itself which is by the international airport)
Guanacaste, Puntarenas and Limon have good surfing (where the best is depends on the month). Limon and Guancaste have sea turtles. Puntarenas has the most interesting rain forests (Monteverde and the Osa Pennisula) but it also has some of the most boring (in my opinion resorts in Tambor, Jaco and in Puntarenas towns).

San Jose is where you want to start and an international flight into SJO will take you there so that works! This region is the population and cultural center of Costa Rica. This is where you will really be able to get a sense of Tico life. Great museums nightlife and world class Universities can be found in the San Jose/San Pedro area.
The Southern Pacific Zone has the most biodiversity and amazing geological features in Costa Rica. Primary growth rainforest mountains fall into the ocean in this part of Puntarenas. Monkeys, toucans and parrots are everywhere. Playas, tortuga, ventanas, arco, ballena, hermosa, dominical and hatillo are all must sees and they are within one hour of eachother!
Limon is another great place to visit. It is a cool Port City and the Caribbean side of Costa Rica has its own unique culture. (Very cool) |

I do not think this is the best way for you to decide where to go. You might be thinking that these provinces compare to US states, but not really. First of all, you will most likely be flying into San Jose. It is the capital and has the most people. It is the center of the country and does not touch the coast. Or you might be flying into Guanacaste, which is on the north Pacific coast. But ur prob flying into san jose. Then you most likey will be wanting to go to the beach. I suggest the pacific side because it is more touristy, safer, and awesome. The two provinces touching the Pacific coast are: Guanacaste and Puntarenas. Both of these places have many dif types of beaches and places to visit. I really like Guanacaste. There are awesome beaches there. If you drive from San Jose to Guanacaste, one route is to pass through Alejuela. Alejuela has the Arenal Volcano. This is my favorite volcano in the country. There are many things to do in this area, life zip lining, rafting, waterfalls.
If you go to Puntarenas, you might like to stay in Jaco. This town has a lot of stuff to do, but is not my fav. More south in Puntarenas is the national park of Manuel Antonio. This place is amaaazing. but it takes a while to get there.
I wish i could go on, but i have to go. sry
Basically, every province has something to offer. It just depends on what you want to do.
:)
anyway, you will have a lot of fun no matter what you do!
I suggest looking at a map of costa rica and visiting various websites for ideas on where to go. |
