I would go for the Hampton Inn, they have free shuttle to and from the airport, really good quality and they offer you a guarantee, if you don't like their services, you don't pay, for more info: http://www.mycostaricalink.com/hotels/san-jose/hampton-inn.htm

You can of course pay that amount if you like, but there are a lot of decent hotels in Alajuela that are a fraction of the cost--a $3 taxi ride from the air port. A couple of nicer B&Bs are Islands B&B at about $50 including breakfast and pickup at the airport islandsbb@hotmail.com La Guaria Inn about $40 laguariahotel@netsscape.net

The town is interesting, especially the park in the center of town where folks go for a stroll around sunset.

If you are landing at SJO Juan Santamaria Airport:

Hampton Inn is a good option.

Best Western Irazu, 10 km from the airport

San Jose Palacio, 12 km from the airport (5 stars, it should be expensive)

?
Stayed at the Hampton Inn at the airport. Nice, simple hotel. Go there.
Tell them I sent you for a discount

Costa Rica Airport Hotel (http://hotelaeropuerto.co.cr/) is only 5 minutes from the airport, they have free transportation to and from the airport, exchange currency, car rental, and offer a free breakfast buffet (which is nice). I have not stayed there in a few years but I believe the hotels prices will fit your needs. You can email them from their website.

Have a great time

There is a nice small hotel about 20 minutes towards San José called Hotel La Pithaya, you can e mail me for exact contact numbers or reservations.
They charge about $55-$75 a night, a good continental breakfast included and the car rental offices are walking distance.
