I just got back from spending a month down there. Already planning my next trip.

First, get an 'Imperial' as soon as you can. Next, definitely get all your meds / shots. You don't have to worry about malaria, but dengue. Don't worry, it's super sensitive down there.

Go to the caribbean side, specifically puerto viejo. Stay at rocking j's if you can, casa verde if you can't.

rent bikes, go to the beach. MAKE the trip into Panama. Go to bocas del toro.

Arenal / la fortuna was cool. don't go expecting major lava tho. it's just a little. if you want to see volcanos, go to masaya volcano in nicaragua. Don't bother with San Jose, if you do, go to cafe mundo for dinner.

monteverde was really nice. do the tours, hikes, etc.

HAVE FUN!!!!

Get some comidas tipicas, gallos pinto, and alot of the coconut rice and beans. The best seafood too.

lonely planet's central america on a shoestring and let's go central america were handy, but nothing beats asking the locals.

Stay out of the bars.
There are beaches, whitewater rafting, canopies, shopping, etc.

Get a guide book - Lonely Planet and Moon guides have been my favorite for my three trips to Costa Rica

There is so much to do in Costa Rica, it is difficult to know where to start. In the San Jose environs, there is a great coffee plantation tour at Doka Estate, an easy trek on a paved path to Poas Volcano, and some nice colonial/19th century architecture in surrounding towns such as Alajuela.

If you get outside of the central highlands, try one of the trams that go over the forest canopy. Try standing the heat and humidity in the rainforest near Sarapiqui and cool off with white water rafting, or head out to the Caribbean coast for turtle hatching season in Tortuguero. I thought Lonely Planet's guide was helpful and you can purchase and download individual .pdf chapters online.
