Most Costa Rican beaches do not have useful life guards, even the ones paid to be there are not all that useful- though of course some are. SO you have to be prepared to handle any problem by yourself, mostly. Do not assume trained help is available.

The 3 beaches you named are all considered safe. None of them are known for sneaky undertows but all 3 do have near shore currents that can carry you out a ways and take you up or down the coast. If you get scared you get in trouble, otherwise no.

Never put a child in any flotation device except for a Mae West type life jacket. All the other types tend to make people float face down, which of course is exactly what you do not want. Mae Wests make people float face up. (The only possible exception are tiny air bladders that go over wrists or ankles but even these tend to float the extremities while lowering the chest and head so they are not really good either but at least are less dangerous.) If the 10 .yo. can swim a bit don't use anything but be reasonable. Watch what other people are doing before going in yourself.

Yes its safe. Just make sure he wears the air straps and don't let him go to far in but its safe to be on the edge and play with the waves and its practice to learn to swim better. I used to go since I was 8 it was always fun and safe as long as you know how to swim.
