Visa is the most used credit card in CR. Then comes M/C and last on the list is A/E and Dinners. I have never had any trouble using Visa, and only one time using M/C, but have had with A/E and Dinners. A lot of the smaller establishments do not take A/E due to the high rates they charge business owners. The same holds true with debit cards.

It is also best to check with your credit card company before going to CR and let them know you will be using it just as a precaution. Otherwise the card may be decline for your protection and then it is on the phone trying to make it right (this happened to my son who was on his honeymoon 2 months ago). Also if you have a line of credit on your credit card make sure it has not changed and still active. Many banks now (due to the economy) have reduced that line, and/or canceled it without owners knowledge ;-(

I am from Costa Rica and I have AMEX, MC, VISA.. all the cards are accepted here... just make sure that is an international card and advise your bank about the travel in order to avoid your card being rejected.

Is recommend Visa but MC will do. American Express charges vendors a high fee so most places go with Visa or MC. Enjoy your visit to this beautiful country.

Don't worry too much about that, take whatever card you normally use i'm sure you won't have trouble with either. Think Master Card is more commonly used here than American Express but still you should be able to use both.
