If you don't want a touristy area, you can try anywhere on the Osa Peninsula. Unfortunately, you are coming to Costa Rica right at the beginning of the tourist high season. Costa Rica gets over two million foreign visitors per year, according to the national tourism institute. However, the Osa Peninsula is still underpopulated, and you are sure to find lots of isolated beaches where you can surf and have a wonderful time. Bring your mosquito repellent if you are planning to go into the jungle or the mountains!
If you need a list of hotels, travel agencies, etc., you can always consult the TicosLand.com website. |

If you want a small, laid back place go to Dominical. Trust me. The population is like 500. If you blink you will pass the town. If you decide to go there. There is only a couple of hotels. There is a hotel called Domilocos. This place is very remote and ideal for you. |

I would try Guiones. The reason why is that you have places near that area that you and you friend (beginners) can actually learn to surf without breaking any bones. Also the 2 very good surfers will have the chance practice at some hot spots.
Now rainforest and surfing usually don´t match at the same place. Try getting to Monteverde on your way to Guiones, stay there a couple of days, its on your way anyway, and explore the cloud forest and rain forest.
Monteverde is touristy, but Guiones isn´t. Also try and get as many weekdays as possible to surf, that way you´ll have the beach to yourself. Mondays are great!!
If you need more help visit my website www.costaricanativa.com, there you can chat with me live, or call me at my 800 number. |

I've spent about two weeks researching this myself as Im heading to Costa in a few weeks for some surf and rainforest exploration. The best place I heard to surf for beginners is Tamarindo. It is touristy but in a good way. A few miles to the north of Tamarindo is Playa Grande(stay here), where the surf is a little more towards the intermediate but sometimes a good beginner can make do. Playa Grande is out of the touristy area so you get to take in more nature. Check out the Hotel Las Tortugas. Its right on the beach break so you literally walk out your hotel room and are right at the surf. Jaco is touristy true, but try a town a little south of Jaco called Playa Hermosa. Black sand beaches and rough waves makes this place great for the Advanced surfer. For the rainforest, try to go to Arenal if you can. Its one of the most active Volcanos in the world and the rainforests there are beautiful and plus theres the hot springs. Thats a big plus!! |
