Which is better. We are going to one of these places for Christmas this year but are torn between the two.

I think that you should inform yourself as much as you can about both countries so that you can make a proper decision. Visit the TicosLand website and look up all the information available on Costa Rica. You can also visit the ICT, which is the official tourism site for Costa Rica. There is a lot of information there.

Costa Rica all the way.....Christmas is great here!!!!!!! Jamaica is nice, but it's no Costa Rica............

In Costa Rica you would get the best of both worlds. On Costa Rica's Caribbean coast you would get somewhat the some culture as you would in Jamaica with its Caribbean style foods, and indigenous calypso scene. After you are done there head to the Pacific and enjoy the rest of the country.

The Costa Rican people are a friendly and outgoing group. They are extremely courteous and welcome just about every foreigner with open arms. Where else can you visit a live volcano or snorkel in crystal clear waters, go zip lining, wade in the hot springs, enjoy a variety of music from jazz to rock and roll. Or kick back with a luxurious classical concert at night with monkeys in the tree tops. And eat a different type of food at each meal .. . and that’s all in the first day.

I heard Jamaicas really dangerous unless you stay in a hotel resort.

Those are two COMPLETELY different kinds of vacations. As a Jamaican, my answer would be economically biased.

The truth is that it would depend on your personal travel experience, and what you want from your vacation.

The Jamaican music and culture would be completely different from Costa Rica. Details such as this could factor in the decision.

Both are great choices but I've heard some experiences from travelers complaining about Jamaica lately, so I would suggest you research Costa Rica, and find the type of resort that suits you and the sightseeing, food, $costs, etc. Definitely go to Guanacaste, then the rainforest; the food is also excellent.

Jamaica will seem more foreign to most Northamericans than Costa Rica. Except for Spanish being spoken Costa Rica is a lot like middle class U.S., perhaps not as well done (roads are bad, services are adequate but very high priced and so on). Costa Rica still has a lot of pretty areas not yet destroyed by the ecotour groups.
