Take dollars is better.
I just had been in Peru the last year. You can exchange in my places. check this out http://www.southernhorizons.com/peru_gen_money.htm
NEVER EXCHANCE ON THE STREET is not safe. is you get dollar in the ATM machine go to safe place like a malls.
some tiem insome crocery store ypu can pay with dollar and the change they can pay you in dollar or Nuevo soles

Take dollars. You can probably get a better exchange rate if you exchange in Peru. Airports are not a good place, because the exc rate is a rip off. You change there when you need to.
In Latin America, businesses take US dollars, but I would not advise it, since you also get screwed in the exchange rate sometimes |

Get New Soles, it's better because the value of the currency is getting appreciated, that means, for every day that you have a dollar, you're wasting a pennie/dollar in just money exchange, it may not be a big deal, but knowing the fact of how much you 'll be spending, you may wanna save those extra pennies to buy something else |

1 dolar is 2.36 soles right now..here in Lima, it's better to change your dollars on the streets than in the banks or the money house. They are safe, dont worry. |

Take dollars...BUT ---BE SURE THAT THEY ARE NEW AND NOT RIPPED. They won't take damaged currency. I learned this the hard way! |
