Dengue fever from mosquitoes from travel to Central America / Costa Rica?

I just returned from a trip to Costa Rica and got bitten by a mosquito. I am worried that I might get dengue fever because it is very common there. Has anyone else traveled in Central America and gotten bug bitten without getting dengue fever? Or has anyone gotten it?

Not to worry. I live in Central America and have been mosquito bitten thousands of times with no ill effects. Dengue is not as prevalent as people seem to believe. There is only one species of mosquito that transmits dengue. It is found in heavily populated areas and bites only during the day. So if you were in a rural area and got bitten at night you have reduced the odds already.

Not all mosquitoes carry dengue fever. If you were bitten by a mosquito that didn't carry dengue, you won't get it. Do you have any symptoms?
My sister got it once, she felt awful. If you get it a second time, then you get the hemorraic one, which is, most of the times, lethal.
But many people get bitten by mosquitoes all the time and they don't get dengue fever.
The best protection is insect repellent!

I hope you don't get dengue!

I've been bitten 000's of times by mosquitoes in Costa Rica and I never got dengue, malaria, and the likes. If you have intense fever, body aches, and pressure built up behind the eyes, then you probably do have dengue. Dengue is most common on the Pacific side of Costa Rica, but should not be a concern unless you're symptomatic.
