dont rent, too expensive, buy a motor! but beware that some corrupt cops will pull you over and charge you on the spot fines. I would recommend you do it by bus. There are some amazing bus services in south america, esp chile, argentina, brazil and uruguay! They offer total recline leathe seats, with waiter service, even offering champaigne! If you do it by bus and with the lonely planet in your hand you are more likely to meet fellow travellers and have so much more fun than doing it by car! All the best to you hope this helps. |

I was in Peru 2 months ago. Only stayed a month but i would definately recommend goin there. Definately agree with others dont get a car in peru, buses all the way but obviously watch your stuff like a hawk! Night buses are the worst, if your stuff is in underground storage every time some1 gets off you'll have to get off to make sure they dont claim your stuff as theirs.... And cant say the buses are amazingly reliable, every single bus i went on broke down for atleast an hour so allow time for that to go wrong =p
if you want information on where best places to go, hostels etc just get in touch =) |

Traveling by car in SA is costly. In Chile for example, they charge $80.00 per day to rent a small car. Hiking or bike riding would be more practical and more fun, since there's more contact with nature and the people and many roads are not paved. |

I agree with the others, car isn't the go for travelling around in Sth America. You miss out on half the experience if you do things away from the public systems.
Take as many forms of local transport as you can, as each one will give you a new experience and make your whole journey much more interesting. You can drive a car in your home country where you know 'it all' and don't need to mix with the very people you've gone abroad to learn about.
Enjoy, coz 27 people in a 15 seater mini van, with all sorts of produce and live stock is an experience not to be missed (good time to learn Spanish too).
How long will the journey take you? That's totally up to you. You could race around and see nothing in a few weeks, or take your time and enjoy the continent for a few months, years even, and see bit more along the way. |

by car only in chile and south argentina, thats where people rent cars
dont dare buying a car to travel Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru , Colombia
If you will only get problems, nobody, but nobody does that...
Buses as mentioned before are the best answer, you must understand where you are going.
So once again, Chile and Argentina(the south) , it can be done with a car, many do it,I think in northern Brazil too, other countries, you really shouldnt, |

I have traveled by bus from Arizona to Puntas Arenas Chile and back by bus except the area called the Darien Gap on the border of Panama and Colombia where there is no road and is very dangerous. I stopped in Panama city and started again in Cali, Colombia (which is a nice city). The worst border crossings were Tapachula, Mexico and Tumbes, Peru.
I do not recomend by car. I met many traveling by motorcycle. My recomendation for a motorcycle is Japanese between 550
and 650 cc,s. Many places to by parts and service
It took me 8 months but I stopped and stayed awhile at the places I liked |

i wouldn't take a car anywhere but argentina and chile. not safe enough for me. some places like peru and bolivia i would be worried enough about just getting a taxi ride. |
