No you do not. You can stay as long as 3 months in Costa Rica as long as you have a valid passport. If you want to stay more than 90 days, you need to leave the country for 72 hours (Panama or Nicaragua) before your visa expires and you can renew for another 90 days. The only trick is that the Costa Rican authorities may ask for proof of a ticket leaving Costa Rica before you will get your new visa.

Do I need a visa to visit Costa Rica?
No, you do not need a visa to visit Costa Rica if you are traveling as a tourist with a US passport valid for at least 30 days, have a prepaid airline ticket to exit Costa Rica and will be staying for no more than 90 days.
