Do They Speak Spanish The Same In Latin America As They Do In Spain?

I was wondering...

Does Latin America and Spain speak the same way or is it a different dialect; sort of like America and UK?

Aside from all the answers given here (the use of vosotros, the difference in lexicon) there's also one notable difference between the Spanish spoken in Spain versus all the other Latin American countries.

In Spain, the "Z" and "C" sounds are pronounced the way "th" as in "thump" is pronounced.... whereas in LatinAmerica it's like the S is Sandal. So Zapato in Latin America is SAH-PAH-TO while in Spain it's THA-PA-TO.

Another notable difference is that Spaniards cuss considerably more than the rest of LatinAmericans. Yes, LatinAmericans cuss, but the spaniards seem to use it in everyday conversations and even in the newspapers, i.e." Presidente Estadounidense Acusado de Puteria" (U.S. President accused of whoring) came out as a headline in Madrid durnig the Lewinsky scandal.

Just like everyone else here has said though... it's very mutually understandable... and lots of Latin Americans see Spaniard movies, and a lot of Spaniards listen to and watch a lot of Latin American media.

Its different but understandable there are some dialectal and semantic diferences also pronunciation and accent diferences, but for latinamericans is understandable the spanish from Spain, however if you are going to learn spanish you will learn the standard spanish spoken in Spain, not the latinamerican spanish and this tends to confuse because the dialects are diferent but easily understandable for natural spanish speakers, I guess this happens with every language.

There's differences. The Vosotros form is used in Spain for second person plural, while it isn't really that common in Latin America. Some vocabulary is different.

Latina de Corazon
the same spanish, but different accent, all latin america countries also have different accents.

liv
Yep its different - but all understandable. Different pronounications. And some slightly different words and meanings too (some are worth being careful of!). And of couse as mentioned by the other answers the missing vosotros verb in latin am spanish.

uhhuh its me b-tches
Different.

Many vocabulary differences, and also some pronunciation differences, especially the lispy Spain Spanish "s" sound.

Also, the "vosotros" pronoun and corresponding verb forms (2nd person plural) are not used in countries such as Mexico.

Of course, there are differences in pronunciation, vocab and (sometimes) verb forms among different Latin American countries, too!

katie
different. Spain uses the vosotros- 2nd person plural conjugation in some areas. Also, they have a funny accent in Spain, sort of like a lisp. I'm sure there's some different slang too
