US citizens get a visa for 90 days at the airport, they jsut fill out some information and you turn it in upon arrival.

No, you will fill in a visa entry form on the plane and hand it in at the airport. You will also have to fill in a customs declaration.

With the visa/entry form you can stay for 90 days.

Once you arrive in CR and go through Immigration, the officer will stamp your passport with a 90 day tourist visa. Once that 90 day period is up, you have to leave the country for 72 hrs and then you can return, and once again get stamped with another 90 tourist visa.

In other words, you do not need a visa from the US first to get to CR.
