Yes. It is checked when you enter the country. It is checked at security points within the country. It is checked when you leave the country. And it is checked again when you return to the U S.

Oh. You can not leave Costa Rica until you pay a $26 exit tax. ha ha. Sad but true.

TRUST ME, FROM BAD EXPERIENCES OF A GUY NOT ME BUT SOME OTHER GUY WHO HAD TO STAY IN THE AIRPORT FOR 24 HOURS UNTIL HE WAS ABLE TO FLY BACK TO THE STATES.
YES YOU DO NEED A PASSPORT TO ENTER THE COUNTRY.
UNLESS YOUR A RESIDENT OF CR.

I wouldn't travel anywhere outside of the US without a passport. Besides if you don't have one then you should get one. It's good to have second legal form of identification.

Absolutely get a passport. Some people say you can get into Costa Rica with a certified birth certificate, but even if that were true, you would need a passport to get back into the U.S.

Zelda
Yes you do. Also, starting in 2007, all U.S. citizens will have to have a passport to leave/enter the U.S. (currently you can get in and out with your birth certificate and photo ID.)

Yes, you do.

Go to travel.state.gov but:

For entry into Costa Rica, U.S. citizens must present valid passports that will not expire for at least thirty days after arrival. Passports should be in good condition; Costa Rican immigration will deny entry if the passport is damaged in any way. Costa Rican authorities generally permit U.S. citizens to stay up to ninety days;

Jack_Frost_Sr
Yes you do need a past port. You need a pass port when you go anywhere out of your country's controlled borders. I am assuming you are from the US, so Costa Rica is not officially a part of the US and therefore a pass port will be needed.
