Costa Rica does celebrate Christmas. Some people of Costa Rica believe in Santa Claus, but the mayority believe Baby Jesus brings presents for good boys and girls.

Here we have a Light Festival in all the cities at the beginning of December. Also, you will find various companies trying to collect funds to take presents to less fortunate people. And also the churches normally give out Christmas presents on Christmas day to poor children.

As in other parts of the world, Christmas in Costa Rica is a time for celebration and parties, sharing and reflecting. The month of December is electric with thoughts of the season, and busy with preparations for festivities, family get togethers and vacations. In late November decorations begin to appear in downtown shops, and by the second week of December everybody has lights strung, cypress wreaths hung and Christmas trees decorated. And you can be sure that here, too, stockings are carefully in place awaiting the arrival of the Baby Jesus.

The traditional Christmas tree in Costa Rica is a big evergreen branch, a small cypress tree, or dried coffee branches. The "tree" is decorated with white paint and brightly colored strips of paper. Lights and small colored balls, a variety of small figures and lace are also used to adorn the greenery. A gold star is placed on top as a symbol of the Star of Bethlehem.

Christmas was first celebrated in Costa Rica in 1601 when then-Governor Don Gonzalo VÃ¡squez de Coronado organized nationwide festivities.

A very popular Latin American tradition--the portal--is a nativity scene constructed of mosses and grass, colored sawdust, cypress twigs, black paper, silver glitter and figurines representing the birth of Jesus in the manger. Along with the traditional figures of Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus, shepards, the three wise men and the ox and mule, Costa Ricans commonly add extra embellishments like dolls, little farm animals, tiny toys, fruits and berries, and lights.

Children used to leave their shoes out for NiÃ±o Dios, the Baby Jesus, to fill although he is gradually being displaced by the more commercial Santa Claus (called San NicolÃ¡s or Colacho)imported from North America.

Well, we used to not believe in that fat a.. but thanks to Coke and many more stores the kids on this days they are used to, but for me it is difficult because when i was a kid (long time ago) our gift was thanks to "el niÃ±o". But we still have some old traditions specially in the remotes zones or towns they have very distincs ways to celebrate christmas. In these days we have a special food that we used to eat on the christmas eve it is called "Tamal".

OH YES. You should see the stores in Costa Rica, Colombia, and Panama right now. They started their Chirstmas decorations and Xmas sales about the same time we did in the USA. They are a bit more traditional than in the USA though. They actually celebrate the TRUE meaning of Christmas as oppose to just going nuts with the credit cards and gifts. Felis Navidad

Santa Claus is always present in Christmas decorations. Some children believe Santa Claus brings the gifts, and other children believe it's the Baby Jesus who brings the gifts. When I was little, most children believed it was the Baby Jesus who brought them the gifts, but nowadays, more and more children believe in Santa Claus, especially in the capital city, San JosÃ©.

The typical food for Christmas and, in general, December is tamales (made the Costa Rican way). People also buy apples and grapes, which are imported from the U.S.

The traditional decorations are the Christmas tree and the Nativity scene, plus other small decorations like Santas, candles, etc.
