Hi Brittany,

On one of my trips to Costa Rica, almost all the airplane passengers were students traveling with classmates for a visit to this beautiful Central America country. My brother-in-law is a Spanish teacher in an Illinois high school and he takes his students to Costa Rica every other year.

As you can tell, Costa Rica is a popular student destination due to the fact that it is generally a safe place to visit.

That said, like visiting any place you are unfamiliar such as any major U.S. city (ie: Chicago, New York, etc.) you need to be aware of your surroundings, stay with your classmates, etc. Your safety alway begins and ends with you and your good decisions (wow - do I sound like a father ;o).

As for the weather in Costa Rica; it is fairly constant year round; it rains, it clears-up, it's hot on the beach and cool in the mountains, etc.

My son is a Costa Rica native, also known as a Costarricense or "Tico". We are moving to a mountain home Northeast of downtown San Jose in the area of Las Nubes de Coronado which loosely translates to 'the clouds of Coronado. Our home is at an altitude of 5,000 feet and quite cool year round compared to other areas of Costa Rica.

For some maps and pictures I invite you to view my blog entry on 1/21/08 at the link below in the Source section.

Other information and pictures are also available on my blog - you and your classmates may find some of the information helpful as you prepare for your trip!

¡Pura Vida!

Hi, you are coming on the dry season, it's going to be very hot and sunny, very beautiful weather specially if you are going to the beach, just take note that Holy Week is in march, and costaricans take holidays and go to the beach, so it's gonna be crowded. The best area to go to beautiful beaches is Guanacaste on the northern part of Costa Rica.
If you are staying in San José, be careful not to show your valuables, it can be dangerous, don't go alone at night to the city. Remember that in Costa Rica you are still a minor, you can't buy beer or any drink. Here the legal age to drink is 18.
Be careful and have fun, pura vida¡!

March is a beautiful month all over the country. It is a time when both coasts are in DRY season. If you are going with your class you probably have a tour already set up for you, it should be very safe in this case. Still keep your valuables to a minimum.

Costa Rica is primarily covered in Rain Forest and other forests of different classification. The only area of Dry frorest is in Guanacaste. If you want some cool beaches, check out this area.

You will want to do more adventuring in costa rica than you would in most tropical destinations because the forest creates such unique eco-systems and there is so many varieties of plants and animals, insects and serpents! An area known as the Peninsula de Osa has 0.6% of the worlds bio-diversity. It is a really cool place on the southern pacific side of the country.

Another cool Spot is Tortuguero where the green sea turtles come to nest in July- Sept. It is a phenomenal occurance that only takes place in such massive numbers in 2 other places in the world. I'll send you the link to this area too, just to see it.

Hey, Costa Rica has a nice beaches, you can go visit the Pacific the Atlantic coast. The best way to find more information is in the internet.
Of course, you have to be careful if you go to the Capital or somewhere else, because danger is everywhere!
