Hostel La Casa de Carmen tel. 507/263-4366 is recommended by Sarah Woods author of "Bradt Panama".
Rates are $20 per double.
A quote from her book: "This is a great little find and boasts a central location just a few minutes walk from Exedra Books and bustling Via Espana. It has 8 colour-themed single, double and triple bedrooms with or without private bathrooms as well as a small apartment for longer stays and a dorm with beds at backpackers rates, which includes a Continental breakfast. Panamanian lunch and dinner served on request. Check current pricing" |

This is my recommendation
Hospedaje Casco Viejo
It is located on Calle 8 and is across the street from Iglesia San Jose (the Church with the Golden Altar . It is very clean and neat on the outside. The inside is currently under renovation and everything has been freshly painted, it is clean and neat as well.
There are 14 rooms; some with, some without private baths. One room has been built to accomodate wheelchair-accessibilty with it's own bathroom and its own entrance. There is a shared kitchen with appliances and cooking utensils which is for the use of all their guest. No television and no phones in the rooms, and no air conditioning, but wonderful overhead fans in all rooms provide ample ventilation and cooling. There is a computer and internet connection centrally located for guests' use.
Prices range:$8.00 to $10.00 per night for clean and safe place to stay.

There's a hostel at Manuel MarĂa Icaza street, frequently used by backpackers.
If you're looking for a cheap and safe hotel I can recommend the ones on El Cangrejo. There are some fairly cheap hotels in that area.
There are others like Hotel Caribe and Hotel Soloy, that may be cheaper but may not be as safe as the one's in El Cangrejo. |

Panama has lots of great hotels, you can stay at the Marriot, which is in the City itself and again there is a listing of tours at the hotel, and shopping guides. Make sure to visit the Panama Canal.....very nice experience. Shopping in "LA CENTRAL" very cheap stuff, you will find great things to bring back. |
