Here is a colorfull map of lima, divided by districts
http://www.guiacalles.com/calles/index.asp
The best districts were the richer people live are: Miraflores, Barranco, San Isidro, Surco, San Borja, La Molina and Cieneguilla. Surquillo is an exception. Why is Surquillo in the middle of all this? Because some 70 years ago, Miraflores was a farmland (Hacienda Surquillo) and the farm workers live in the town of surquillo, the town transformed into what today is the poor district of surquillo.
Anyway, in the 70's Lima suffered a huge inmigration proceess from the provinces, that hasn't stop till this day, at first they located to the north and south in a triangle shape area (that's how they got the names CONES, North Cone and South Cone). Today they represent 2/3 of Lima's population.
The south cone is much poorer than the north, that's why in the year 2000 many commercial stores set their eyes on the North cone and specially in the heart of it, the district of Independencia and they built what is today the MEGA PLAZA MALL, a huge mall that sells millions of dollars daily!
You can find good neighborhoods inside Independencia as well as Comas or Los Olivos, but there's also poberty and that brings robery along. But many people go to work there because is a highly commercial zone. |

Independencia is a district in Lima, Peru. It is located to the north of downtown and usually considered part of the "Cono Norte" (The north cone. A name given to all the low income housing that sprung up north of Lima) although they consider themselves as "North Lima" and thus not part of the "Cone".
I'm enclosing the map of the district and the web page for the district's administration (unluckily it is only in Spanish) |
