I've been in Lima and in Santiago as well and can say that as to my opinion there are no problems both in Peru and in Chile concerning the security.
Everything is under control by military police.
Go ahead, take away all doubts and good luck.
Thanks.

Machu Picchu Wonder7
Lima and Santiago are both safe cities to live, but people from Peru is more friendly, they try to make u confortable, Chileans are a litlle bit "cold"

But Go ahead,

Chile is the safest place to live in Latin America. Peru is about average with some really bad places as the other answer stated as well as some safe spots.

AQUARIUS
I think that Chile is much more safer than Peru. Peru could be dangerous during political strifes or protests. But, when you're visiting Santiago or Easter Island near Chile, you won't face any problems. It will be the safest place you can visit in Latin America probably. Peru will be interesting, but Chile will be safer politically and as well as you can rely on the people in Chile more than in Peru.

Well it depends on the city or place u chose to live..

i don't know about chile

but in Peru u have ur REAL bad towns but u also have ur good towns where military men and women are in watching out with safe security

for example if u were to live in Peru the best place to live in would be Miraflores

Dude, Chile has one of the most stable economies in Latin America. Safety is all about knowing your way around, even washington DC is bound to not be too safe. so, go to a city where youu know someone that can show you around and tell you where are the gettos and where not to go.
