I think that for your case your best bet is to find someone who will rent out their home in El Salvador for you. You can try asking around people in the US who have homes in El Salvador. That is what my mom does when people she knows go to El Salvador, they just pay the utilities that they use for however long they stay there.
P.S. I just came back from Soyapango (colonia Los Santos I) and it is not as dangerous as the media makes it out to be. Have a safe and fun trip.

WELL EL SALVADOR is small and if you really want a nice cheap hotel you should stay in San Salvador which is just 30 minutes to soyapango because it is f=dangerous in that area

If anything, stay at a hotel in San Salvador. You're safer there.
My husband and I were on vacation in El Salvador and stayed at the Royal Decameron Salinitas. It's a bit pricey but amazing.
Here, check this site out of the hotels in El Salvador and their rates. If you have any luck, you're better off renting a house, ask your family or friends who have family that are willing to rent their home to you. You never know, God works miracles. Good luck on your mission. It will be a blessing to the orphans. =)
