A big event for the 3 countries in 2006 was the approval of the Free Trade Agreement with the United States. With this agreement this 3 countries are expecting a growth in their economies.
Politically speaking, Nicaragua recently had elections. The leftist party presided by Daniel Ortega won the presidency. There are a lot of expections of the direction this government will take, taking into account that he was a dictator in Nicaragua in the late 70s, 80s and early 90s with the Sandinista movement (pro comunism).
El Salvador was the first central american country that entered the Free Trade Agreement with the US. At the beggining of the year it started to receive a lot of foreign investment, but things are slowing down since the agreement went into effect in other Central American countries where labor is cheaper (El Salvador since a few years ago has the dollar as its currency). Politically, El Salvador has been governed by the right movement since around 20 years ago, but the left movement is the second largest force, having a large presence in the legislative branch.
Guatemala is starting to receive more foreign investment in this last months since the approval of the trade agreement with the US, due to its privilege position being neighbor with the largest free trade agreement of the world (NAFTA - between Canada, US and Mexico). For the first time in years, tourism has surpassed coffee as its major source of income, growing from last year at a rate of 30%, the highest of Latin America. The board of tourism is expecting 1.5 million visitors this year. Perhaps the most ambitious project for investment in Guatemala is the mesoamerican oil refinery. In one week, major refinery companies of the world will participate in a bid to build an oil refinery that can produce 360,000 barrels of oil per day. In the bid, the company has to decide between Puerto Quetzal in Guatemala and Puerto Armuelles in Panama. This project is the most important project in the central american region after the Panama Canal. |
