Does the Panama Canal still exist?
Simple question.
I have these two pictures each with a map of a section of Panama (the country).
Check out the second one to get an overview of the area as seen at platial. Follow the red line. Check out the first one to see the area more detailed.
My "old" atlas shows that the Panama Canal was owned by the U.S. and went from about Colon to about Panama (the city).
Is this still true?
If not, what happened to change it?
Does someone else own the canal?
Does the canal still exist? Additional Details NEW
I do not understand why platial's map and satellite view can be so different. The map clearly does not show the Panama Canal or any part of it except near Pedro Miguel.
The satellite image clearly shows the entire Panama Canal, from the southeastern corner of the gulf at the north (just west of Colon) southeastward to Punta Mala, southwest of Panama (the city).
No need to respond to this as the question is now closed.
It still exists. It used to belonged to the Americans, but Jimmy Carter signed an agreement that sent it back to Panama as long as the canal remained politically neutral. Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has command currently.

Yes it still exists. There are many LARGE ships that pass through it every week, if not every day.

The Panama Canal still exists, even if the Panama Canal Zone which was a US territory prior to 1999 does not.
