For the students of latin american politics/history: what do you think are some of the fundamental reasons ...

...that the latin amreican and/or south american countries remain so screwed up relative to many other developed nations?

They have very long histories, rich cultures, industrious and ambitious people, and natural resources. If you've studied, visited, or lived in S. America or Central America, please share you thoughts. I'm curious about some of the specific fundamental issues.

Complex question. Two factors are the large indigenous populations of many nations are not fully integrated into Hispanic culture and have historic ties to the past ie Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras. Brazil has a large population of former African Slaves that were marginalized from Portuguese society.

As well, there is an undercurrent of Hispanic disdain for manual labor. Labor was depreciated rather than lionized by Unions in the 19th and 20th centuries in the Industrialized world. In addition Hispanic Culture has been historically based upon Rural Agriculture, not manufacturing.

Higher Education for generations has not been available to most Latin Americans and was for some reason not a prized goal of many Hispanics even to this day. Further, the Luso Hispanic culture is customarily that of the caudillo or strong man to govern. Constant although periodic quartelazos(palace coups) break the thread of Democratic progress. The problem of Latin America are complex but based in our culture and behavior.....

I lived in central America El Salvador to be exact for about 5 years or so., i was born in New York so i had some cathcing up or misconceptions about history and had to learn new parts of history, and how to see things from the other side of the window. There are many reason why these are still third world countries. If you go back into history you will see that all these country had plenty if not more natural resources than many world powers of today. As a matter of fact many first world countries of modern world have historically used other countries as stepping stones to reach the status they have now.

Take England for example, during colonial times England and many other European countries became "owners" of Latin America and south America. at the time their favorite hobby was stripping these countries of their gold, silver, precious stones and so forth. Add to that the fact natives were used and traded as slave and were considered possessions. These countries by today's standards exploited central and south America to benefit their own economies and help them grow into what they are now.

By the time these nations which include the U.S (we adopted Africans) had great armies and economic growth, central and south America was barely getting its own freedom and trying to find and its own identity. Look at the it the other way around I am pretty sure that if El Salvador natives would have sailed to Europe and taken their land, natural resource and used Europeans as slaves El Salvador would have had a much better foundation of wealth to evolve into a modern country. Mean while England would still be a third world country and not have royalty.

In our daily lives today we use dollars, but for every dollar you use their has to be an equal amount of gold in a bank to back up the worth of that dollar. Can you imagine how it would be if central and south America would still posse all their resources they had and were never colonized the way they were. It's like growing trees next to each other and only feeding the one on the left with fertilizer, you cant expect both trees to grow up the same size.

There are different kinds of development in each country , there are wealth countries like Argentina , Chile and Brazil , i think your question only has the intention to bother , or being racist .

By the way , why a lot of Americans say that Mexico is on South America ? , others says in Central America , please guys , read a book , or grab a map , really ignorant people , totally closed from the world .

I would put much of it down to government corruption. Every government is corrupt to some degree, but it seems rampant in Latin America.
