The survival kit is a great idea! I would include sunscreen. And how about pictures of you guys together, maybe a phone card so she can call you more? Don't forget the sappy card too...

I lived there for a year as an exchange student.
Essentials, jerseys of your local sports teams, even if they are high school (these are wonderful to wear and at the end of the year I made some amazing trades).
When I went I couldn't find a recipe for chocolate chip cookies and they did not have the the chips. Send a recipe for the cookies and if you can't manage the chips- face it semi sweet bars make great chunks and they loved mine. (Right off the the toll house recipe, almost)
I still keep in touch with my host family there and have even made a return trip for my host sister's wedding. Any Q's just ask.
I have to say wait til she gets there to get a hairdryer, adapters don't always work. Take an ample supply of her preferred feminine products, they may not be available. Peanut butter is hard to find. A journal with addresses/e-mails/phone numbers in part of it might be nice too. I hope she loves it as much as I did.

I think giving your friend a going away gift is a very kind thing to do. I studied abroad a couple a years ago and I had the best experiance. The best thing you could give a girl thats going to be away from home would be a gift card. Then she is able to get whatever she may need or want. Stamped envelopes will be no help, unless you have Uruguaian stamps. How about a small bag with foods she loves but will probably not be able to get there. eg. Kraft dinner, Jelly Belly`s, favorite chocolate bar, etc. Don`t make it too big, I am sure she has lots of stuff to take with her.

How about an air neck pillow to use on the airplane. That way you'll be helping the friend both coming and going. It's a long trip!
