The buses in Guatemala are sometimes referred to as "chicken buses" by foreigners; this is because in the rural areas it is possible to see animals taken by bus into the local market places to be sold. To my knowledge the local people do not call them "chicken buses" though! They are often brightly painted and have lights and slogans on them; these slogans are mainly Christian in origin or are the names of the drivers' wife, daughter, mother, or girlfriend. In Antigua, where I live for part of each year, there are now also tuk-tuks' which are really motorcycles that have a compartment on the back for two or three people to ride. I have seen up to six people in a tuk-tuk though, and it looked quite dangerous! I know that there are also tuk-tuks' operating in some towns around Lake Atitlan as well. Boats of all sizes are also used to cross the lake there; that is an important form of transportation. There are no commercial trains that I know of in Guatemala at this time though. There were in the past, but they were dismantled and have not yet been reinstated. Good luck with your project.

There are lots of cars, pickups, trucks, taxis, motorcycles, scooters, bicycles, horses, and buses in Guatemala, just like everywhere else. Many people who cannot afford a car or motorcycle use taxis and buses or bicycles.

chato
Yes there are cars in Guatemala in fact the city is to small and was not built for the amount of cars that currently cross the city.

In the big towns and majo cities you find a lot of cars, but in the really small and poor towns & villages you don't find cars, in fact they are so poor and isolated that there are no roads to acces them and you have to cross bridges over rivers to get to those towns. They are so isolated that more 60 of this vilages don't have electricity, gas or running water.
