Beach: I strongly recommend you Playa Conchal... there are not sand, the beach is made up of little shells that's the reason of the name. The nearest big resort is Meliá Playa Conchal.

Volcano: the Arenal Volcano, in La Fortuna city you would have a great view, specially at night that if you are lucky you can see the lava going out from the crater. And Tabacón Hotsprings are really near of it. The nearest big resort is Tabacon Resort.

Green Mountains: At Monteverde Natural Refuge, there are a lot of nature... from little frogs and orchids to huge tropical rain forest trees. The nearest resort, I don't know but you can ask at www.visitcostarica.com (CR'n official site of tourism)

Why not???... you can also make a little stop at San Jose, I prefer spending more time at the ones I mentioned, but in Downtown you can know more of Costa Rica at different museums as: National Museum, Gold Museum and Jade Museum.

WELCOME TO COSTA RICA and ENJOY YOUR TRIP!
because, Costa Rica is Pura Vida!!!

Touristic places:

-Monteverde: It's a BEAUTIFUL place, full of nature, and the experience of visiting it is simply extraordinary. There are lots of options when it comes to Monteverde, like canopy, tours through the forest, a snake display show and some others.

-Volcan Arenal: If you're going to go, go at night. Most of the time you can see small eruptions (which are, of course, safe to watch) and there are some hot springs near. The view is breath taking.

-Isla Tortuga: it's a small island located in the Pacific Coast, and it takes like 40-50 minutes to get there in a yacht (not counting the journey to Puntarenas, that takes like 1 30- 2 00 hrs, depending on the driver and your luck!^_^). On your way to Isla Tortuga, you may see dolphins, and if the yacht is small, you can jump from the top to the sea (I did it, and it's great!) Besides, you can go snorkeling in cristal-clear waters, and stay there for a night, or two.

Cultural/Heritage:

The "Museo De Oro" is a museum where you can see small statues and figures made of gold that were made by the natives(I mean before Christopher Collumbus got here!) It's located in downtown San Jose.

"Museo de Jade" is a jade museum, where you can see the same things but made from jade. It's also located in downtown San Jose.

"Museo Nacional" is Costa Rica's National Museum. The building used to be a war fort, but was remodeled and has been used as a museum since 1960-70. You can see just about everything there, from ancient art to modern art and history. Plus you can get some nice souvenirs!

If you need any more help, you can always send me a message....(Sorry for the grammar, I'm not a native English speaker....^_~)

Pura vida!

If you are a surfer & younger generation you will enjoy Jaco, without a doubt! Kind of like a Keywest style place...lot's of beach_goers indeed!
However, some of the best surfing beaches can be found on the Pacific coast...I highly reccommend Manuel Antonio, Dominical,Dominicalito,Uvita all next to one another...Uvita has excellent surf sites as well as the huge sandbar called "The Whales Tail"...where the whales & Dolphins come in to breed... I suggest you visit www.Dominical.biz & www.Uvita.biz ENJOY~ PURA VIDA~

All previous answers I read are pretty good. I'll add one more in suggesting that if you are in the Dominical area, try staying at Villas Rio Mar for a night or two. Also try a horse-riding tour at Cataratas Nauyaca for about $40 that includes breakfast and lunch and swimming, but you'll need reservations and the tour starts at 7 or 8 AM. (It's worth it!)

I would like to suggest two different itineraries for you.

#1

Day 1 - Leave Airport head straight for La Fortuna de San Carlos and Arenal Volcano. Great places to stay are the Arenal Backpackers ($10 pp dorm room) , cabinas Arsol ($12pp private room) , or hotel Carmela ($50 double occp.)
Evening visit to hot springs, i recommend going to Eco Termales. Reservations can also include dinner here, very nice atmosphere.

Day 2 - Rainforest adventure of your choice. There is great access to some of the top river rafting in the country here.
Evening, book a hike to see the lava flows.

Day 3 - transport to Monteverde early (8:30 jeep boat jeep)
Go for a hike in the national reserve in time to catch the sunset on the continental divide.

Hotels here, Casa Tranquillo ($15 private room with bath and breakfast included)

http://www.monteverdeinfo.com/

Day 4 - some more rainforest adventure (i recommend selvatura canopy tour, horse back riding, or coffee tours)

Day 5 - transport to the beach (Highly recommend Manuel Antonio for the beauty) STAY AWAY FROM JACO If you are in to surf then go to Dominical

Day 6/7 - Beaches in the National Park ect.

Day 8 - Back to San Jose

OR...

Quicker version #2

Day 1 - Leave San Jose and stop at the Rainforest Arial tram en route to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca (or other beach on the caribbean side of the country.)

Day 3 - Sarapiqui (Selva Verde is a nice lodge) River rafting and rain forest here

Day 5 Arenal - volcano the hot springs, nice way to end.

Day 7 La paz waterfall gardens - close to San Jose and you can spend your last night here as it is only 90min to the international airport SJO. There is another volcano close to here to the Poas Volcano.

http://www.anywherecostarica.com/

this site has info on all the places people have recommended to you. Enjoy planning and all the best!

the beach i would for sure visit is in Guanacaste, and there is a hotel there im not sure of the name of it. but there s two. on is in octal!!! and that s beauitful.
the other is near by as well and a very nice resort but i cna think of it.

the good think about guanacaste is it s not from liberia, which has an international airport. but i wouldnt really go to san jose, unless you want to get to know the history and the culture. than yea i would.

you should go to the jungle and do the zip lining there and stuff it s great. also you should do some white water rafting there. i did this past time i was there it was great and the ride there was goregous and it s in san jose.
