Going to Costa Rica this weekend?

I'm a very lucky daughter whose father just received an inheritance. I've been given a vacation and we've chosen Costa Rica. However, we have to leave this weekend due to work and school constraints.

I need tips on what to do, where to stay, and what to see. I'm doing research as well, but I only have until tomorrow morning/early afternoon to buy air tickets and pick a hotel.

We are pretty active and will likely want to hike, do a zip line tour, see the jungles. We'd also like to have some time relaxing on a nice beach and snorkeling. We aren't interested in fishing or the casinos.
Additional Details
The hurricane didn't hit Costa Rica, it hit Jamaica to the east and is heading for the Yucatan Peninsula to the north.

I'm so jealous! OK, I have the perfect spot for you. La Fortuna. It has the famous, huge, active, live volcano, Arenal. You can also visit the rainforest(jungle), do ziplines, go hiking, and visit the oh-so-wonderful natural hot springs!

Then you'll be driving distance from lots of good beaches. I reccomend Playa Conchal, next to the little town Brasilito. It's SO beautiful and you can snorkle and the water is just clear and pretty and the sand if made up of little little shells.

Email me if you have any questions.

encantame.
ah you want to zipline>?
go to selvatura.com
and click on canopy tours.
you'll love it
lots of handsome latinos there!

also i would advise
el sesteo hotel in the arenal region ( la fortuna)

edit: i seem to notice a lot of people are talking about la fortuna. GO THERE its a wonderful place with winderful people and wonderful times!!!

Your best bet is to get a guide book (Lonely Planet and Moon guides are my favorites)

Everything depends on how long you are going to stay. You have to keep in mind, that distances are pretty long and you will loose a lot of time doing great things if you tavel around. So if you have like 2-3 nights I would stay in San Jose (it is not too pretty), but you can do one day trips from here (Arenal Volcano, La Pay Waterfall Gardens, Canopy (zip line), White Water Rafting, even a day at the beach. If you have a week or so, I would stay in San Jose only the first and last night and this only if your flight is arriving late or leaving early. And then do a classic tour, like driving up to the Arenal Volcano, do a canopy there, hike there (jungle/rainforest is here is well), and then drive over to GUanacaste to one of the beaches, where you might be able to snorkle, or mid pacific (black sand beaches. check www.tamtravel.com, a local travel operator they might have great ideas and can help with reservations if needed.

Manuel Antonio is beautiful.. I got back on Saturday and we stayed at the Mariposa Hotel. Its a nice hotel with stunning views.. Compared to the other hotels in the area, it is moderately priced. You can do zip line, river rafting, and hiking at Manuel Antonio National Park. It is the rainy season, but it rains in the evening, so you have literally all day to do what you want. The sun rises at 5:30 in the morning, so you have till 4 to get activities done. If you choose to go here, when you land in San Jose, go to the Coca Cola bus station and take a bus to Manuel Antonio for 6 bucks. Or you could stay in San Jose over night, and take a flight into Quepos which is the neighboring town. Check out the NatureAir website.. And I highly suggest you bring watershoes, an umbrella, sunscreen, bugspray and a flash light..

i second the motion to head for La Fortuna.........centrally located for ease of visiting other areas. be sure to see Monteverde, the day trip to it , is part of the highlight, rainfroest, zip lines, butterflys, dangling bridges. beautiful place.
get up to the Guanacaste beaches, again reasonably close to La Fortuna.
Take a ferry from Puntarenas to other beach towns.
Too much to offer, but a nice hotel around Arenal volcano in La Fortuna is a great start.
Enjoy!!!!

It is the rainy season and the hurricane DEAN will likely make your trip unpleasant. Pick another time---like around Christmas.

People need to look at a map. Costa Rica is FAR south of the hurricane. Hurricanes are VERY care in Costa Rica anyway.... it is too far south.... the hurricane would have to make it over Venezuela and then turn further south... I dont think Costa Rica has ever had a direct hit, and even a near miss is rare.

Sheesh... public school fails us again.

There is a zip cord and hiking in Jaco, and the beach is descent. There are a few volcano's you could visit as well. If you have time, there is a lot to do in Costa Rica, but a lot of it required a good drive.

You could wing it, have a general idea of where you want to go, and just go.... there are tons of nice beaches to see, and tons to things to do just by driving and exploring for yourself. Get a guide book (I use Lonely Planet... they have info on everything, even way way off the beaten path) and go and be careful and HAVE FUN!

you are right about the hurricane. it didn't hit us. we are ok and is not bad here. sunny days have been good. well, a beach you can go and relax, Montezuma, you'll love it is great. that's an A+. the waterfalls and the small cozy town with everything in it and a pretty good budget and there is a lot you can do. i know you'll love it. the zip lines or canopy at san lorenzo, that's on the way to la fortuna or the arenal volcano. it on the road and you won't miss it. that's one of the best here cuz is in the cloud forest and sometimes you don't see the end do to the fog and makes it interested. i believe they have the longest one in costa rica. at la fortuna you can check the arenal and the hot water springs. here in the san jose surroundings. you can check the poas volcano and the waterfall gardens. also a day at the braulio carrillo national park. is amazing that park. i believe that you'll drive cuz is much easier to travel. any other info... just ask
