Going to Peru for 2 months?

I will be staying in Lima for a month and 1 month in La Merced, Chanchamayo ( hahah i dont think a lot of people have heard of it...) I have no idea what to expect... i will be going this summer when it is winter there. How cold are the winters and is it still cold in La Merced? Thank you.

Lima during the winter is foggy by the beach, very humid (80-97%) and temperature goes down to 12-13°C at night (54°F) but don't get fooled by numbers, the great humidity makes it easy for the coldness to penetrate your body up to the bones, so you better cover yourself well and use a scarf to protect your neck. It never rains, instead tiny drops of water appear and drift forming a mist when humidity reaches the nineties.

But if you drive some 30 min to 1 hr inland, you'll find dry, sunny wheather, kind of like an INDIAN SUMMER. There are many social clubs at a short distance from Lima, in the same road that takes you to La Merced where most of the people go during the winter. This is known as the YUNGA region (between 500mt above sea level and 1000mt asl). Then you drive for another hour to San Mateo (2,500mt) then another hour and a half to the top of the mountain in Ticlio (4,818mt) and Down to the other side, first you'll encounter a highland landscape down to Tarma (3,000 mt) then everything gets hotter and green because you are reaching the boundary between the highland and the high jungle in La Merced (750mt).

Winter is the best time of the year to go to La Merced, because is dry season, but even so you'll catch a few rain for this is the rainforest. It's hot, humid and lot's of bugs!

Bring lots of layers. Water resistant clothing is a must because Lima suffers from high humidity even when it's quite cold out. The water will seem to get in underneath your clothes if you're not properly dressed!

When I was in Peru last summer for us/winter for them, I got a terrible sunburn during the days when I could walk around in a t-shirt and shorts comfortably. All night long, I shivered and even ended up sleeping in layers of two t-shirts, a sweatshirt, my coat, an emergency blanket, and three layers of hotel blankets.

The weather is crazy, so pack for variety! The good news is that clothing is cheap in Peru and makes good souvenirs when you get back home. You can get pretty much anything down there that you can get up here if you shop around a little.

Be sure to pack lots of TP (not usually provided in bathrooms), water purification tabs, and get your shots if you intend to make any visits to the rainforest.

in lima in winter i can get as cold as 10 celcius or 50 farenheit which its not freezing! but usually is around 54 F
the best thing is to dress in layers because sometimes it feels colder or warmer so better be prepare dress a t-shirt with a long sleeve sweater and a jacket regular jeans and closed toes shoes its perfect for the weather in peru in the same street u can feel really cold standing in the shadow and if u cross the street to the sun u feel inmediatly warmer (just take one layer of clothing off)
houses dont have heating but a good sweater is enough, malls and restaurants do.
in chanchamayo try the coffe they sre famous for it...

good luck and have fun...

In Lima, if the place you are staying at doesn't have heat, then you will FREEZE. Bring a coat. It's usually muggy and rainy out. Lima's nice. The traffic is bad though! Make sure you watch when you cross the streets. They don't stop at red lights, they just beep the horns. It's pretty funny actually. I was never in La Merced, sorry. Hope you have fun!

Why do you think people have never heard of La Merced? It's a popular tourist destination due partly to the good weather it enjoys year-round. The area around La Merced is famous for the fruit they grow.Pineapples, oranges, papayas and avacados to name a few. They also grow a good amount of excellent coffee(it's the main export product). This should give you an idea of the year-round climate in La Merced ,these are some of the very same fruits that are grown in Hawaii.
I think you'll love it there...Have a great trip!

Chanchamayo gets really cold. But what really is a prob is humidity in Lima sometimes it reaches 96%.
I am oreoginally from Peru living there for almost all my life.
Last winter I've been told it got really cold, so better get ready for a flu shot at the nearest clinic.
One more thing just drink water from a bottle. =)
