Going to Peru next summer...?

Has anyone ever gone there on vacation? I have anywhere from 2 weeks to 1 month to spend and I'm looking for the best bang for my buck. I'd be most interested in tours/packages that offer the least amount of contact with civilization as humanly possible. I know this is the hard part, but I'm trying to budget myself to packages up to, but not exceeding $2000 (I've found a few but more options would always be nice).

Peru is a beautiful country, I don't know why anyone would say it's ugly. Lima is not much to look at save for a few architectural things, but if you get outside the city it's quite nice. If you want to avoid tourism, avoid Cusco and Macchu Picchu. Although I did see an article recently either in National Geographic or Nat Geo Traveler about a new, less populated trek to Macchu Picchu. The Inca Trail as I'm sure you know is totally overrun with tourists, but this trek is apparently supposed to be more remote and far less known. I'd recommend checking that out.

If you really wanted a trek that is off the beaten path, I'd recommend going on the Ciudad Perdida trek in Colombia. We did that a couple of years ago and it was fantastic. We were with a group of only about 15 people including guides and we saw virtually no one out there. Of course that's a completely different country all together. :)

I disagree. I love Peru. I spent 3 months there this past summer and i loved it. I lived in Lima and did a lot of traveling. I loved loved loved Cusco. I also loved Huancayo. Either place is cheap and nice.

i have to disagree with the person that said Peru is ugly, well probably that person if from the ghettos of peru, but if u go to Miraflores,San Borja,San Isidro, Pueblo Libre, and La Molina its really nice and there is lways lots of tourist. Their so many things to do ad with 2000 dollars is definetly enough becuz the currentcy exchange should be about 2.6 when i was there it was 2.8 but its always around there. And urwhole time there u dont have to stay in lima,u can go to machu pichu or to Asia which is this city south of lima about 2 hours which has some of the nicest beaches and clubs. i stayed 1 whole month in Peru with only 700 dollars =)

Don't, Peru is ugly, and.............................I live here, and once, just walking around at the Center of Lima I saw a poor dutch, begging, sat on the floor: some peruvians stole his documents, wallet, and he was left with nothing than the clothes he was wearing.

It's not a good place to visit, and a worse place to live, believe me!
