Guatemalan president and wife anti-international adoption? Rumor or true? |
I am in the very last stage of adopting from Guatemala and have hit a snag. According to the Guatemalan lawyers it is because the Guatemalan president and his wife are severly anti-international adoption (even though they have adopted from the Ukraine) and they have asked PGN to stall all adoptions out of Guatemala. Does anyone here have any information in regards to this issue? I've been waiting to bring my son home from Guatemala since November 2005. My husband and I have visited him and have been corresponding with him through letters and photos for several months. All of our paperwork has been completed and ready since the first part of June. We've been in PGN since then and are STUCK! We don't know what to do. Is there anyone in Guatemala that could open our eyes as to what we might need to do? Would writing a letter to the President of Guatemala help or is he anti-American as well? Please help....I want to get my little boy home....he has no where else to go. Additional Details I totally understand the politicians being cautious in regards to children being kidnapped for adoption purposes. I am very understanding that there is a legal process that the Guatemalan gov't must go through to make sure the children best interest are being served. However, DNA was completed in our son's case in April. It was a 99.99% match. The birth mother has come in for counseling on several occasions since she relinquished him last Oct. She is 21 and had a set of twins by another man and therefore wanted to relinquish her 2 year old by her previous boyfriend. I want to be a mother to her 2 year old!! But, I can't get him home. Our homestudy has been completed and in Guatemala since Jan. We've got our I171H and have been Pre-approved by the Embassy. We are now in PGN and just need to get OUT so that we can get our PINK slip so we can get our son. But this is where we're stuck. I understand the reasons behind Guate being cautious, but we've jumped through all the hoops. |

The guatemalan president and his wife are NOT anti-international adoption, they are anti-bastards who do business and make a profit out of ignorant women. I would not worry if I was you, one always fears the worse, but objectively speaking, a stall in adoption is very unlikely. Oh and the president and first lady are not anti-american. |

Have you looked into the foster child system? We adopted a brother and sister 2 and 5 age 6 weeks after we completed the course for having a foster care home. In our state you tell them up front your looking to for a foster parent with the plan to adopt the child in your care. YOu give them the details of what you want , race, sex, hair color ect and they match it. Total cost about 150.00. Lots of babys also if that is what you want. My criteria was less that 8 and out of diapers.
I see people shopping the world for kids and we got lots in this country for a lot less work. Good luck |

Adoptions are a serious political issue in Guatemala because there have been cases of persons kidnapped for adoption purposes or people putting other person's children for adoption. For that reason, adoption is a hot button issue and no Guatemalan politician can be pro-adoption. |

I have to strongly disagree with Yellow - it is impossible to kidnap a child and get them through the system. As I'm sure you know DNA testing is required of the baby and the birth mother. Only in very rare cases (usually when you are dealing with a bad agency) does this happen.
The slow down in the process has nothing to do w/the president (even though I've heard the same thing about him). It has a lot to do with the US ratifying the Hague and the fact that US will no longer allow citizens to adopt from Guatemala after January 2007.
Please don't panic - as you are in process, your adoption should go to completion - it just may take a while longer.
